film chemistry in canada? (pt. 2)

well after a lot of calling around & emailing various places, we have success: I now have all the chemicals needed to develop B&W & colour film, both C-41 and E-6! For anyone in BC that is interested, Beau Photo Supply in Vancouver can custom order you in a kit. It’ll take a few weeks to get in most likely, but it’s better than having to order powder kits from out of country for jacked up prices + jacked up shipping.

I ended up going for the gallon kits so I can do around 30+ rolls without having to re-order. End price for both kits was around $213 + tax, but in the long run it’ll pay off considering getting a shop to do it will be around $10+ a roll. You can also get kits by the pint or quart (whatever those are in metric) for less, but it’ll also handle less film. I have to get a couple accordion bottles, 110 processing reels, clips for drying and some sleeves for storage still, but I should be doing my first run within the next couple days.

now to finally buy a film scanner…

  10. film chemistry in canada?

    10 notes

I know that film is a dying medium, but I had no idea how much until I tried to start developing my own rolls. The cost to have someone else do it, even just the processing with no prints, is crazy. near ten times what it would cost to do it myself. If I wanted to get all my rolls done right now, 35mm, 120, 110, and potentially some microfilm in the near future, I’d be looking at hundreds for a relatively small amount, if I can even find a place that does all I need. most of it will probably be shipped elsewhere, jacking up the price more.

So this weekend I went to pick up some chemicals and some equipment to replace the stuff that was either lost or misplaced, and to my surprise found that here, in canada, I can only get the chemicals for B&W, at least according to all the shops I’ve called so far. Yes, I can order c-41 powder kits from two shops in the US, but the shipping amount is more than the kit, and is simply not cost effective.

forget about ordering anything for e-6. if it’s liquid, it’s not making it past the border.

so where does a canadian get c-41 or e-6 chemistry these days? so far the search has been fairly frustrating, moreso when the clerk you speak to says they have what you want, goes to check, and then comes back and says they don’t actually have it and will never be getting more in…

c’mon guys, film shouldn’t be dying like this. at least in other countries you have some options. is DIY film over in canada?

looks like I’ll be shooting more B&W and leaving my colour rolls to rot until I have a lot of disposable cash.
